The Old Man in the Cemetery

I’ve heard a tale about a statue in the Crothersville City Cemetery that will shake your hand, or maybe it’s not the statue, but the ghost of a banker that spent all the bank’s money. Either way I wanted to go check this cemetery out.

There are two statues close to the old entrance to the cemetery, one for Martha Bess and one for her husband E.C. Bess. I’m guessing the man’s statue is the one that the previous tale is about. What struck me about this statue, however, was that I’d never seen one like it in a cemetery before.

It’s a statue of an old man, looking grumpy and just old man-ish. It’s a big contrast compared to the statue for his wife, which is more traditional in the cemetery kind of way.

I looked up a little information about the markers, and learned that Mr. Bess was never a banker, but rather he worked with the railroad. Local history indicates that Bess sent pictures of his wife to artists in Italy to carve the statue, in classic Roman style, that now resides on her grave. He then sent pictures of himself, but his statue is of a man in business suit and tie. He never got to see his statue either, as he died before it arrived in Crothersville.

I had no unusual experiences here, but it is a sight to see if you’re ever in the area.

Wow! That is an amazing statue. It would scare the daylights out of me, if I came on it unaware.
